SERIOUSLY...
ii find it offensive, but sometimes not when a particular person trying to speak chinese 'INCORRECTLY & FOR FUN'. Sometimes ii laugh silently 'cause they're making fool out of themselves. well it depends on my mood and situation. Not all the time i'm happy about it.
But seriously...?
Here are some scenes we (chinese) often encounter:-
Scene 1:
Malay: Ni hao ma, wo bu chi dao... (Hello, I dont know).
Chinese: Oh.. (OR) Oh hi...Ni hao... *being good person & give respond*
Chinese: Oh.. (OR) Oh hi...Ni hao... *being good person & give respond*
Comment: They dont stop after the greeting, but continue the sentences as conversation described above. Instead of "zhi", they pronounced "chi" which carry the meaning "chicken". Secondly, if you're being funny...the "dao", you can think it as "knife". So you will have this situation.
Person A: Ni hao ma, wo bu chi dao (Hello, I dont know)
Chinese: Oh..Ni hao...correction...you should say "ni hao ma, wo SHI chi dao" (Oh hello...correction...you should say "Hello, ii am 'Chiken Knife'")
Chinese: Oh..Ni hao...correction...you should say "ni hao ma, wo SHI chi dao" (Oh hello...correction...you should say "Hello, ii am 'Chiken Knife'")
Thus either Person A nodded to your word, or knew you trying to make fool out of him. There you go...that would be similar to the shitty cheap & wrong direct translation subtitle in DVD we often get.
Scene 2:
*person trying to call you, but dont know your chinese name*
Anonymous: Oi.! (or Hey!) Ah CHONG! (If girls, Ah Moi!)
Chinese: *ignore & keep walking straight*
Anonymous: Oi !! Ah CHONG...haiya...sombong sudah lah you!?
Comment: Seriously? If you dont know our names...don't simply give us a surname. Gosh.! Of all so many chinese names, why pick 'ah chong' ? Is it because it's letter "C" : Chinese = Chong ? Not only Chinese name, Indians especially as well. "Muthu Sami" or inappropriately "Kaling" - seriously?
You will definately get slap with the big roti-canai frying pan.
Scene 3:
Anonymous: Hoi...ching chung chong chau lah...(continue with more alien language)
Chinese: *give blurr face*
Chinese: *give blurr face*
Comment: LOL? hello..ii guess enter the wrong planet. This is called Earth. You come in peace?
.
Scene 4:
.
*Malay talking with Malay friends in proper malay dialect*
*Chinese friend joined the group*
*Chinese friend joined the group*
Person A: "Hey Ah Ming... mana lu pegi si malam? manyak buzy ah? ...lu paham apa wa cikalap?"
.
Comment: OMG?! What happen to your mother language? Does our disease infected you all of the sudden you met 'us'. I don't know if you're trying to be nice to make us in the 'group' to have sense of belonging. Thank You, but we don't need that. Impersonating older generation chinese way of speaking is so outdated... I would imagine if Chinese interviewer interviewing these kind of people. Confirm "FAILED".
PS: Apologize if offensive or hurt any of you reader. But seriously...if you're one of them. "Think Twice" before blabbing random stuff. If you wanna learn other languages, ask them - or maybe not.
.
"STOP RACISM"
